Sciatica is one of those conditions that’s well-heard of, but frequently misunderstood. At Back to Mind, our chiropractic teams have worked with hundreds of people dealing with pain dysfunction related to this multifaceted syndrome.

Symptoms of Sciatica

As mentioned, sciatica iswoman experiences sciatica pain in leg a syndrome, so it’s not a specific disease process but rather a collection of symptoms which can occur for one of several reasons (discussed shortly). Some of the most common symptoms of sciatica include:

  • Buttocks and groin pain
  • Leg pain running from the posterior thigh to the foot (it often feels sharp, shooting, burning, searing, or stabbing)
  • Muscle pain and achiness in the lower back and buttocks (this can be caused by reflexive guarding and may feel more dull and achy)
  • Numbness, tingling, and weakness in the leg

Leg symptoms (rather than back symptoms) are typically the most prominent and problematic in sciatica. Symptoms will usually only affect one side of the body, and they may come and go depending on your activity, stress level, and posture.

Causes of Sciatica

So, what exactly is causing all these symptoms? First, we need a short anatomy lesson.

Exiting near the bottom of your spinal cord are the two largest nerves in your body called the sciatic nerves. These nerves are like mirror images of each other and come out of the spinal cord on the right and left side if your body in your lumbar area.

With sciatica, one of these nerves becomes compressed by some structure near its exit point from the spinal cord. This could be caused by a disc herniation or disc bulge, a bony spur associated with osteoarthritis, or a joint subluxation or narrowed joint space such as in the case of degenerative disc disease or stenosis.

Your likelihood for sciatica may increase if you stand a lot for work or have a highly physically demanding job or sport; if you’re overweight; if you’re highly sedentary; if you smoke; and if you’re a male between the ages of 35-55.
