About Headaches and Migraines

While headaches and migraines both cause pain and aching in your head, they are different conditions with different symptoms and causes.  Headaches cause dull, aching head pain, and tightness or pressure in different parts of your head. Headaches can also cause soreness in your neck and shoulder muscles, and tenderness on your scalp.

Our South Florida headache doctor treats both migraines and headaches and can help bring relief to nearly everyone who suffers from these painful conditions.

Causes of Headaches and Migraines

Certain causes, or “triggers,” can set off a headache or migraine. Common causes for headaches include:

  • Tension and stress
  • Misaligned bones in the neck
  • Eating certain food, such as processed meats that contain nitrates
  • Environmental stimuli, such as noise, lights, stress, etc.
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Changes in sleep habits
  • Lack of sleep

Symptoms of Headaches and Migraines

Headaches and migraines are painful conditions. They can be frequent or occasion. Some people suffer from chronic headaches and migraines.

The primary symptom of a headache is a pain in any region of your head. Headaches may occur on one or both sides of your head. They might happen in just one area of your head or radiate across your head from one place to another. Sometimes the pain is a dull ache, at other times it may feel like a sharp or stabbing pain.

Headache can also feel like a vise squeezing your head. Headaches can start suddenly or slowly, and last anywhere from less than an hour to several days.

What is the Difference Between a Headache and a Migraine?

One of the first questions people often ask us is to explain the difference between a headache and a migraine. It is important to note that a headache can come in many shapes and forms, one of which is a migraine. Therefore, in this sense, a migraine is a type of headache. The term “headache” is usually used to refer to a tension headache; however, “migraine” is often short for a migraine headache. In addition to a migraine headache, there are a few other types of headaches that a chiropractor can address as well.

What are the Other Types of Headaches?

In addition to a migraine headache, there are a few other forms of headaches as well. Some of the other types of headaches that people should note include:

Tension HeadacheA tension headache is the most common form of headache. When someone is suffering from a tension headache, the muscles that are located in the scalp start to pull tighter. When this happens, tension is applied to the head that causes a pincer or a vice grip sensation to be applied to the skull. As a result, people feel a strong pressure that is typically associated with this type of headache. A chiropractor can use a variety of headache treatment options to help alleviate this type of headache.

Cluster Headache:  A cluster headache is an unusual form of headache that can be debilitating. When someone is suffering from a cluster headache, they often complain of temporary paralysis on one side of the face. They might also start to sweat or tear up on one side of the face. This is typically treated with extra oxygen.

Concussion Headache: If someone suffers a blow to the head, he or she might be diagnosed with a concussion. The headache from a concussion is often described as a pounding or ringing sensation in the head and ears.

The Different Types of Migraines

If someone is suffering from a migraine, there are two possible types that might be present. These include:

With Aura: The first type of migraine is called a migraine with aura. If someone is suffering from this type of headache, they often have a premonition that the headache is about to start. This is sometimes a strong smell, flashing lights, or some other signal.

Without Aura: The other type of migraine headache is called a migraine without aura. This is the exact opposite of the first one. If someone has this type of migraine, the headache can show up out of blue without any warning.

How Can a Chiropractor Provide Headache Treatment?

If someone is suffering from a headache or migraine, he or she should visit a chiropractor for help. There are a number of ways that a chiropractor can help someone with headache and migraine treatment. First, the chiropractor can provide adjustments and manipulations which can be used to alleviate the excessive tension that is pulling on the scalp. When the muscles release, the pressure on the scalp is released. This causes the headache to go away.

If someone is suffering from a migraine, a chiropractor can perform manipulations that can change the way blood flows throughout the brain. Because blood flow can be tied to the development of migraine headaches, this can be used to alleviate the root cause of migraine headaches.
